This free square footage calculator turns room dimensions into total area in seconds, so homeowners, renters, contractors and DIYers can plan flooring, paint, tiling or landscaping without doing the maths by hand. Enter a length and width and it returns the finished square footage, ready to compare against material coverage or a real-estate listing.
Square footage is simply area, and for any rectangular space the formula is length × width. Measure both sides in the same unit — usually feet — multiply them together, and the result is the area in square feet. For an L-shaped or irregular room, split it into rectangles, calculate each piece separately, then add the sub-totals together for the full floor area.
If your measurements are in metres or inches, convert first: one square metre equals 10.764 square feet, and there are 144 square inches in a single square foot. When buying materials, it is standard practice to add a 5–10% waste allowance on top of the raw square footage to cover cuts, offcuts and mistakes.
Multiply the length by the width of a rectangular space. For example, a 12ft × 10ft room is 120 sq ft.
Square footage is used for flooring, painting, real estate listings, heating/cooling calculations and building permits.
1 square metre = 10.764 square feet. 1 square foot = 0.0929 square metres.
Break the space into simple rectangles, calculate the area of each one separately, then add the results together. This works for L-shaped and multi-section rooms.
